The Ever Important Candle... or Few.

Is there really anything more that can be said about the addition of candle(s) to your gathering and tables? If so, it probably wouldn't be me who says it, but I couldn't leave this off the list of "Simple Things That Add Impact." So, I just want to say 4 very obvious things about candles.

1. Light - Candles add light (like I said, keen grasp on the obvious). In the evening hours they cast a beautiful warm glow. I also love using candles during the day. Obviously the light of the candle won't have the effect it does in the evening, but there is so much more to a candle than that. Which leads us to our next thing.

2. Fragrance - Candles smell good. But they have to be good quality candles! There is nothing fun about walking into a room filled with the scent of a cheap, synthetic candle burning. On the other hand, it's great to encounter an authentic aroma that makes you want to take a deep breath in and enjoy it as part of the collective experience. That's because the sense of smell is directly connected to the brain's limbic system... which simply means that smell has the ability to trigger an emotional response.

3. Color - With the endless array of types, shapes and colors of candles available today, they can be a great contribution to the design elements of your table(s).

4. Atmosphere - Candles and moonlight... aaaaahh.... so perfect. Candles on a tea table sitting next to the honeycomb and flowers... delicious. Candles at daybreak with coffee and pastry... yummm. Candles not only add light and fragrance, but by virtue of both, create a feeling or mood. Day or night, a table feels special when the time was taken to add and light a candle(s).
